Icy road

Life doesn’t stop in Hayward even though the snow and freezing temperatures try to stop it. Tips for Driving on Icy Roads

When doing any traveling in inclement weather the first and most important step is to be prepared. Be aware of the weather conditions, check that your tires are properly inflated, and fill your gas tank even if the trip will be short. You should be prepared for breakdowns with extra supplies, i.e. blankets, ice scraper, food and water, and flashlights. It is better to be over-prepared on the roads of Cumberland than to be stuck in the event of an icy road crash. Keep these tips in mind when on the road:

  • Stay Home: Take the worry and unnecessary risk out of the way and only go out when it is essential.
  • Drive Slowly: Adjust the vehicle’s speed to account for lower traction. Slowly apply the gas to retain traction and avoid spinning out the tires. Decrease speed sooner, remember that it takes longer to slow down on the icy roads.
  • Increase Following Distance: Keep a larger buffer between vehicles as it increases the margin of safety. It gives the driver greater time to react to their vehicle and the other vehicles on the road.
  • Know Braking Capability: Get a feel for how the brakes will respond. Even with anti-lock brakes, keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply a firm and steady pressure on the brake pedal.
  • Try Not to Stop: It takes more inertia to start moving from a full stop as opposed to accelerating when the car is still rolling. Use proper judgement when approaching intersections and stop lights and, if possible, keep the car in motion if the light will change.
  • Don’t Accelerate Uphill: Accelerating on icy roads will cause the wheels to spin. Gain enough inertia before going up the hill and let the inertia carry the vehicle to the to. Do not stop if possible as that may cause the car to lose traction. Once at the top, reduce speed for proceeding downhill.

  • Move the Vehicle: If the vehicle is still functioning, navigate it safely out of the way of traffic and turn on the hazard lights. If the driver needs to leave the vehicle, stay in the car until it is safe to move towards the guard rail or away from the road. Other vehicles may lose control at that same spot.
  • Alert the Authorities: They can clear the roadway of any effects of the accident and create an incident report that is needed for insurance claims.
  • Survey Vehicle State: Be sure to document the state of the vehicle with pictures along with any incident report, insurance agents will require this documentation for claims. If the damage is minimal, it can be driven to the local mechanic or collision center, however, if a tow is needed, it can be towed directly to our collision center.
